I was so intrigued by the second full moon that fell on Halloween this year, 2020. Called the Blue Moon, it’s the second full moon in the same month. The first is the harvest moon, named for the brightest moon of the month where farmers would harvest their crops by the light of the night sky before winter came. Full moons and blue moons are opportunities to release and heal. An auspicious time to mend our bodies, minds, and hearts. 2020 has been an exasperating year and certainly one to forget. And the irony of a full moon and a blue moon, falling on Halloween this year seemed quite apropos.

I’ve become more spiritual lately. Just trying to be free and expressive and get my mind off the unrelenting news flow. I am beginning to learn how stones and crystals can offer healing. I was inspired by a group of crystals in my studio. The way the citrine, clear quartz, selenite, obsidian, and pyrite played off each other was comforting to me. I have a beautiful blue kyanite, which when added to the others, it made a wonderful palette.

My intention was to play and relax. However, by letting the mediums guide me organically, my mind kept focusing on the existential questions of life and my purpose for being here. I question why the best people, the good souls, the kind and generous ones, often get cheated out of life. Why? I wonder. What is the reason kind, generous people die tragically while dangerous people get ahead.

I love to lose myself in watching the colors flow separately and together. I find it hypnotizing. Self control is really important with watercolors because there’s such mystery and beauty in them when dry. You cannot be precise with this medium. The beauty of it is the freedom and escape it offers. Something we all need these days.
